North of Napa’s famous wine country, the numerous Lake County resorts were once the crown jewels of Northern California, where many people traveled to “take the waters” in our geothermally active regions. Today, most of these “palaces of leisure” are just a few scraps of wood and foundations fading into Mother Nature – with the exception of one – the beautifully renovated, historic Lodge at Blue Lakes. Originally named the Blue Lakes Hotel, The Lodge at Blue Lakes twice burned to the ground before being rebuilt in its current location along Highway 20 in the early 1940’s. It was the era of Big Bands and dance halls, The Lodge at Blue Lakes was host to many festive weekends with live bands and plenty of Lindy Hopping! The property was a dancehall, restaurant and motel, which later declined into bankruptcy with boarded-up doors and windows. One day, Peter and Maryann Schmid visited the place and fell in love with property, its surrounding mountains and the beautiful Blue Lakes. The couple immediately began the restoration of the The Lodge at Blue Lakes into the charming, welcoming auberge it is today. Two years in the making, The Lodge at Blue Lakes reopened on Memorial Day with 20 luxury hotel rooms (now 22) and a spectacular Special Events Center. The rooms have been beautifully restored with modern amenities and decorator accents. The deluxe rooms feature four-poster beds with in-room jacuzzis and fireplaces, many opening directly to the sparkling spring-fed waters of the Blue Lakes. The Lodge at Blue Lakes is a playground for everyone! Families and friends can enjoy their time underneath the sun by the lake. With Northern California’s largest fleet of electric boats and yachts and plenty of inflatable floats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards for rent, you can spend the day floating, boating, or simply relaxing on our sandy beach. The Lodge at Blue Lakes also has the Special Events Center and the lakeside deck, which are beautiful backdrops to any celebrations. If you’re looking for an affordable, wine country wedding, a location for your family reunion, corporate retreat or high school prom celebration, we offer a variety of packages to meet most budgets. Recently restored by artist, Richard Vargas, the 25 handpainted murals in The Lodge at Blue Lakes Events Center depicts the lives of Native people, early settlers, and Lake County’s stunning beauty. The murals were painted during the 1960s by local artists, wherein house paint and acrylic paint were used on press paper and drywall. The murals were damaged when Peter and Maryann Schmid secured the property. Most of the murals had water stains, were fading of color and peeling of paint. To restore the paintings, the Schmids requested assistance for its restoration. Richard Vargas repaired the scratches, took off the old pain and refinished the murals with oil paints. “I studied art most of my life. I have a master’s degree in painting and art history. I have also studied in Europe. I worked for Disney entertainment as a scenic artist restoring props and artwork. In the past I have designed and worked on murals for churches, buildings and city projects,” says Vargas. “My most recent work has been custom-finishes in multi-million dollar homes.”
